about

This album has an interesting beginning. I finished "Simple Things" and was so proud. I still love that album and the nostalgic mood it sets. I decided to join the Fort Worth Songwriters Association in March. I wanted to start playing live more regularly and I wanted to network with other songwriters. Since then I have met some great people, played a lot of gigs and have gone to many song critiques. I also got it into my head that I would try to write some radio friendly hit country songs. So I started listening to pop country radio and reading books about being a hit songwriter etc.. I wrote some songs that I was proud of, but I soon learned that if the radio is your goal, you start questioning everything you write. Plus, I thought the pop country music was trash. I found some real gems, but,for the most part, it is garbage. I realized that just because you are a successful Nashville songwriter doesn't make you a good songwriter. Then the new cd came out by The Tallest Man On Earth and I realized that he was writing music true to himself, and that what I was trying to do was sucking all the life out of my soul. I may never have a hit, or get a song cut by a major(or minor) artist, but at least I'll be happy writing what I believe in.
That said, I did learn a lot about the craft of songwriting. On this album you will hear tighter, shorter songs. I get to the chorus quicker and I try to focus on a hook and a memorable melody. I still go to open mics and song critiques, but I am writing for myself. If I strike gold along the way, great.
As for the title, "Two Sides," I have always loved heavy music, and delicate music. I've always admired Neil Young's musical choices. He can play heavy or soft, and it's always Neil. I wanted to do the same. One side is more electric(I wouldn't call it heavy), and the other side is acoustic. Enjoy.
